Spring 2009

May 22, 2009: A whole party of geese of many ages and sizes were seen nibbling and napping outside the Science Factory this morning. Looks like they have a babysitting co-op! We think there may even have been a ducking in their midst! (Nearby Nature guides)

May 21, 2009: The great blue herons are almost all grown up! There are four nests in the Fluff from cottonwood trees looks like snow in the spring!cottonwood tree outside the Science Factory this year...more than ever before in our memory. Lately the heron "babies" have been putting on a wonderful show for the kids who come to the park for school nature walks. They squawk loudly when mom and dad arrive with lunch and stand and stretch their wings all the time, looking ready to take off any minute. Lots of herons have also been sighted in the canoe canal, stalking fish and frogs. See Feature Creature for more info. (Beth Stein, Nearby Nature Staff)

April 30, 2009: Fun with feathers! On my school nature walk today, one of the children Raindrops sparkle in Alton Baker Park -- photo by Sarah Pondchose a feather to serve as a "Poohstick" for our stick race in the canal. As the feather floated downstream, a swallow darted down to pick it up...possibly to take it back to its nest. It flew just a little way above the water and then had to drop its too heavy load. Amazingly enough, two more birds tried to grab the feather as well! None of them succeeded in their mission, but it sure was fun to watch them try! (Sally Keller, Nearby Nature Volunteer Guide)
