Earth Day Park Cleanup with SOLVE

In honor of Earth Day, Nearby Nature is partnering with SOLVE for an annual cleanup of Alton Baker Park. Join neighbors, community organizations, and local businesses as we pick up litter to help ensure the park is clean and safe for everyone – all while enjoying a stroll in the park. Maybe you’ll see a great blue heron, a duck, or a beaver!

Meet on the lawn by the yurt at Nearby Nature’s site in Alton Baker Park. Nearby Nature will provide disposable gloves and tools. Volunteers should register in advance, bring a water bottle, a snack, and dress for the weather in closed-toe shoes and clothes they don’t mind getting dirty. Due to potential safety concerns related to kids and picking up trash, we ask that all participants are 10 years of age or older.

Celebrate night creatures at our 27th annual Haunted Hike Celebration and Fundraiser! Enjoy an hour long pumpkin-lit hike in Alton Baker Park and meet an entertaining costumed bat, frog, spider, owl, and more. Join us for night-themed activities in the shelter before or after your hike. The event happens rain or moonshine — so dress for the weather!

Members FREE*! Non-Members $10/individual or $25/family (adults and children in the same household). Pre-registration and payment required online here. NOTE — when you register, please only register in ONE adult’s name. As you complete your registration, you will be asked how many adults and how many children are in your group. Thanks!

Help Nearby Nature reach its goal of getting Every Child Outside by contributing to our ECO Fund as part of this event! This year alone we have already granted $15,000 to families and schools!

Citizen Science: OH My Look Up High

Join us for a Citizen Science adventure! This month we will learn about Ospreys and Herons as we document park water bird activity. Designed for adult participants. If you have a smartphone or a camera, bring one to take pictures. Smartphone users please load the iNaturalist app (inaturalist.org/) onto your phone if possible. Members FREE, non-members $7. Pre-register online. Space limited due to COVID-19 precautions. Meet outside Nearby Nature’s Yurt in Alton Baker Park.

Winter Wild – Wonder Keepers Begins!

This month our preschool Wonder Keepers program theme will be Winter Wild! Explore the winter wonderland of the Pacific Northwest! Solve migration mysteries, hunt for hibernators, and discover why it’s not easy being green in winter. Learn how to hide in plain sight, survive in the forest, and build shelters that keep us warm and dry.

Wednesdays (January 12-February 2) from 12:30-4:30 pm at our Learnscape in Alton Baker Park, rain or shine, kids 4-5 years old. Flexible drop off between 12:30-1 pm and pick up between 4-4:30 pm. Online enrollment is on-going. Simply pay the $35 deposit and we will prorate your final fees due according to when you join the group.

Water’s Way – Wonder Keepers Begins!

This month our preschool Wonder Keepers program theme will be Water’s Way! Celebrate the wonders of water in our Willamette Valley home. Follow the journey of rain from the sky to the sea and back again as we explore riverside trails and get to know water wildlife. Tell river tales, make water music, and create rain art in our wonderful Learnscape Outdoor Classroom!

Wednesdays (February 9-March 2) from 12:30-4:30 pm at our Learnscape in Alton Baker Park, rain or shine, kids 4-5 years old. Flexible drop off between 12:30-1 pm and pick up between 4-4:30 pm. Online enrollment is on-going. Simply pay the $35 deposit and we will prorate your final fees due according to when you join the group.
