Enjoy outdoor nature play in our Learnscape plus toddler and pre-school activities and stories. This month we’ll sniff, touch, and nibble our way through the garden as we use our five senses to learn about plant parts and sow our very own seeds to take home. What can we learn about sharing and caring from nature nearby? Explore the park and search for examples of communication, cooperation, and teamwork in the animal and plant communities around us. Weave a web of life, play Each One-Teach One, and strengthen your teamwork skills in building, racing, and balancing games!

Learnscape Volunteer Day

Join us in the Learnscape to get your hands in the soil and prepare the gardens for another vibrant season. We’ll weed, compost, and plant while enjoying bird song and all the signs of spring’s returning.

We’ll meet in the middle of the Learnscape between the two sheds adjacent to the yurt. Look for the green Nearby Nature signs pointing the way. We will provide gloves, tools, and small snacks. We ask that you bring a water bottle, and dress for the weather in closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Please also RSVP beforehand to Shaun Daniel at parkhost@nearbynature.org to let us know you’re coming.

No School Day Adventure: Trees and Bees at Hendricks Park

Explore off the beaten path as we discover new trails and cool hiding spots in the Hendricks Park forest. Play mini-gnome hide and seek and look for the tallest, widest, and weirdest trees in the forest. Explore the rhododendron garden as well and learn how to dissect a flower, do a bee dance, and create rainbow Earth Art!

No School Day Adventure: Paws, Claws, and Jaws

Sneak through the trees and stalk through the grasses in search of mammal tracks and traces. Unlock the mysteries of local critters as we investigate real pelts, skulls, and antlers. Learn new ways to identify animals and tell stories about them using the clues they leave behind. Make your own set of antlers and create a track tale to tell your friends!

Journey to the days before wagon trains as we hike to the Kalapuya Talking Stones and build forest-inspired shelters. Learn words, play games, and hear stories from different native cultures. Make a campfire in our fire pit (weather permitting) and create roasted snacks to enjoy with fresh-harvested herb tea!
